The FRN became aware in 2013 that there was a need in the local area for health and hygiene items for families who were struggling to afford them. Research has shown that there is a link between food security and the ability to purchase other non-food basic essentials. Those struggling with food security are often also struggling to obtain necessary health and hygiene items. While services focusing on food distribution are already established in Marshall County, typically the priority is on food products and not other household essentials. In response to this, the FRN was able to establish the Carolyn Dalzell Closet of Hope in January 2014, named after longtime FRN Board member and community leader who lost her battle with cancer while the Closet of Hope was being established. The Closet speaks to her spirit of giving and continues her legacy of helping others in need. The mission of the Closet of Hope is to provide these needed resources to families and children in order to improve outcomes and reduce barriers that a lack of personal care items can create.
The Closet of Hope has been able to collect and distribute over 200,000 items worth more than $2 million to local community members in need or to local organizations for further distribution, since January 2014. These product distributions would have been able to serve an average of 7,500 individuals annually, but duplication occurs because the closet does not have many eligibility requirements. The FRN obtains product for the Closet of Hope through variety of avenues, one of which is donations made by local community members or organizations.
