Marshall County FRN Organizes Community-Wide Food Drive: Update
The Marshall County FRN organized a community wide food drive in July to benefit local organizations that provide food related assistance. Food insecurity is an issue that affects many residents in Marshall County, and there are a number of local organizations that work to combat the issue by providing residents with access to needed food items. However, it was brought to the attention of the FRN that these organizations experience an increase in need during the summer months while simultaneously experiencing a decline in donations. Local businesses and groups were invited to form “donor teams” to collect food items for the drive during the month of July. On July 25, collected items were brought to the WV Penitentiary Training Center for organization and distribution. Because of the large volume of donations, the FRN needed assistance in preparing the items for distribution. Local high school students and community leaders volunteered and assisted staff in sorting, counting, and preparing the items for distribution. Overall, approximately 9,100 pounds of food were collected and distributed to 12 recipient organizations that provide food related assistance in Marshall County.
