Marshall County Schools Hygiene Closets: Creating a Supportive School Environment

The Marshall County FRN aims to be responsive to the needs of our community partners that serve children and families in Marshall County. Recently, with the support of the Community Foundation of the Ohio Valley, we partnered with Hilltop Elementary School to expand a hygiene closet that contains essential health and hygiene items for students that may need these items during the school year. The closet contains deodorant, feminine hygiene products, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo/conditioner, and more. We also assisted in restocking several additional Marshall County Schools hygiene closets with a variety of clothing and hygiene supplies based on feedback from school nurses, counselors, and social workers. We tailored our restocks based on the needs of students at the school.

The availability of health and hygiene products in the school promotes a positive student learning environment, increases student self-esteem and well-being, and may reduce student absences and distractions. Students that lack access to these products may feel uncomfortable in their classroom and have increased stress related to their personal hygiene. When students are healthy and supported, this can increase their engagement at school and allow them to better focus on their academic development. We support these projects to ensure that students have access to the essentials they need to have a successful school year.
